Cardiac First Responder (C.F.R.)

This is a PHECC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council) accredited course


Purpose:         To provide a basic level of training to those who have no experience of responding to cardiac events.

 

Duration:        1 Day.

 

Certification:   Certificate will be awarded and will be recognised by PHECC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council)

 

Entry Level:    No previous experience required.

 

General Aims: To develop the students knowledge, skills and attitudes, leading to an enhancement of their ability to

                       respond to and assist at any cardiac event and apply care to meet the standards laid down by PHECC

                       (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council).

 

Delivery:         The course will be delivered through both Theory and Practical sessions, which will encourage student

                       participation and feedback.

 

Assessment:  Ongoing assessment throughout the day will be employed and full attendance required to successfully

                      complete the programme and receive certification. A theory test of multiple choice questions and skills

                      demonstration will be required.



Core Course Components:

 

1. Introduction: First Aid, definitions and its importance.

 

2. Finding out what's wrong:

  • Patient Assessment
  • Scene Size-up
  • Initial Assessment & Physical Examination
  • Signs and Symptoms: Respiration, pulse, patient reactivity

3. C.P.R. - Objectives:

  • Chain of Survival
  • Airway Breathing
  • Chest Compressions
  • Rescue Breaths
  • Dealing with Airway Obstruction

4. The heart: Ventricular Fibrillation. The A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrillator), its main    
    components & steps involved in its basic operation.

 

  • How the heart works
  • Treating Cardiac Arrest
  • Using an A.E.D.
  • Special Considerations
  • A.E.D. maintenance

5. Shock:

  • Recognising signs and symptoms of shock
  • Demonstrate how to care for shock
  • Identifying the signs of anaphylactic shock
