Basic Life Support Instructor
This 2 day course is designed to give people who work in the healthcare community the opportunity to learn the skills and competencies necessary to facilitate a CPR & AED training course. Through out this course students will actively engage with each other deliver training sessions, participate in group discussion on resuscitation techniques etc, evaluate fellow student's techniques, and learn how to provide constructive comment. This is all done while working to the students level within the healthcare sector. Often times students will complete the course with others from outside their discipline, this in itself can be just as a valuable training tool, as it allows students the opportunity to see how it works outside their own environment. This can be particularly useful as instructors as it gives them a broader view of the entire resuscitation system.
Prerequisites
Entry onto this course is restricted to people actively employed in the healthcare sector. Such people should be part of a professional register and have a requirement to complete some sort of continuous development or training. For people not currently in the healthcare sector, or those who wish only to teach "lay people" or in the community, they should consider the HeartSaver AED Instructor Course. This is not that the training is harder or of a higher caliber, its simply that the Basic Life Support Instructor Course involves equipment (Such as a Bag Valve Mask that will not generally be available to non healthcare staff) and techniques that are no longer used for "lay person" CPR (such as pulse check, because even healthcare staff who do not carry it out on a regular basis can get it wrong!).
Aswell as that students will also be required to complete a core instrutor pack. This disk/workbook which takes approximately 6 hours, allows the student to learn the fundamentals of how to be and instructor, run a class and deal with any problems as they arise. This workbook will be provided to you when you book onto the course and can be completed in your own time. At the end of the course a certificate can be printed out and presented to your instructor trainer on the first day of the course.
Finally you will be required to have in your possession a current Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider certificate stating that you have completed the course.
What's Included
On the two day course student's will learn everything necessary to teach a full CPR & AED class at healthcare provider level. This includes everything that usually goes along with a Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider Course. As well as that students who complete this instructors course will also be qualified to teach the HeartSaver AED Course. During the course students will also complete the necessary modules to allow them become registered as PHECC Cardiac First Responder Instructors, this is at both CFR - Advanced level and CFR - Community level.

Certification
At the end of the course students will not automatically be deemed competent instructors. There are three final steps in becoming certified. The first involves observing an instructor teach their class. The second involves assisting with the delivery of a course. The third involves teaching a class and having a member of the Irish Heart Foundation national faculty observe you. This is solely to ensure that your instructional methods are at the required standard. Please note that we do not always arrange these steps for each student. As instructors you will have a responsibility to keep your skills up-to-date, be familiar with current best practice and maintain your certification. Part of that involves teach at least 4 courses over 2 years. This is criteria that the Irish Heart Foundation have laid down in relation to instructors. Given the requirements as instructors we felt that the steps involved in becoming certified are not that difficult to overcome. When the students reach the final phase of the certification process, we can provide a list of accredited faculty members that they can contact and arrange a mutually convenient date to be monitored.
